Day 38 Wabasha, MN to Red Wing, MN 32.5 miles Total 1,833.4 mi

We blasted out of the motel to The Eagle Cafe for breakfast.  Steve parked his bike near the door and was serenaded by a nest of fledgling baby birds, almost too big for the nest they were crammed into. Then he was off.

Allane went right along.  Drove the same route Steve was riding.  Cruised through Lake City, famous for Lake Pepin and the invention of water skiing.  A bit further on, we came to Frontenac.  There was an historic marker, so Allane pulled in to the shaded park.  Spotted a trail that was part of the close by State Park, so she decided to hike to Sand Point Beach.  Another wide, beautiful trail through woods and chorusing birdsong.

The air is often full of cotton floating down from the cottonwood trees.

A sand beach, as promised.

This was a short day for Steve.  He blasted past me as I was walking, and I barely had time to get to Red Wing ahead of him.  I found a great shop called Caribou Coffee.  He got his iced coffee and settled in with his computer to plan new routes.  He managed to average a bit over 13 mph today and logged his fastest to date 40km.

Another frog friend.
While he plotted, I wandered around town.  I didn't find much besides an old boot or two.  And a cute shop called Go Brazen.  Couldn't bring myself to buy anything, what does that say about me?

I did visit the Red Wing Pottery Museum.  Sorry, Red Wing, but that extensive museum was chock-a-block full of pottery that I did not find particularly attractive.
Once Steve was satisfied with his plans, we moved on to lunch at Kelly's.  A nice patio lunch.  We shared a salad and a flatbread.  So good, but the salad could have fed a family.
Checked into the hotel and swam in the pool.  Steve did a bit more work on his routes and our accommodations.  I walked to a nearby "mall" of stores and somehow ended up with a tiny cherry pie for later!
We weren't hungry for dinner, but we headed downtown to check out the Red Wing shoe store.  Of course, the clerk Stephen was an avid bicyclist, so he and Steve finished off the last 30 minutes of opening hours chatting.  He did tell us a lot about Red Wing boots and shoes.

According to Stephen, this boot is bigger than the LL Bean boot, and better because it is made of real leather just like the real boots.

  1. Allane, you have taken so many nice pictures! I love them. It's good to see the greet continuing as you head west. The Red Wing 'leather' boot is awesome!
