Day 52 Hebron, ND to Medora, ND 76.4 miles Total 2,557.3 mi

WHAT A DAY!!!  Steve started out just as the sky was beginning to lighten beyond DARK, about 4:45am.  What we weren't sure of was the time zone change.  I think after he rode for an hour, it was still 4:45 am.  Anyway, he was happy to be on the road alone in the relative cool of the morning.

Enough about him...you need to see what I saw!

I drove (after it was fully light out, thank you) down the Enchanted Highway.  Local artist, Gary Greff, conceived of the project, intending to build something to revive his hometown of Regent after a long period of economic and population decline.  He began building enormous scrap metal sculptures along the 32 mile length of highway in 1989.

Geese in Flight

Deer Crossing

Grasshoppers in the Field

Fisherman's Dream

Pheasants on the Prairie

Teddy Rides Again

Tin Family

The Knight and the Dragon (in Regent, unfinished?)

It was a surprise to me that after driving for an hour and a half, it was still only 8am!  Meaning that none of the businesses in Regent where the artist intended me to spend money were open.

But I did meet Steve in Belfield, after driving through New England, ND:

The sign says "New England Welcomes You"

I saw many other picture-worthy sights.

Black Butte

I couldn't stop a get a good angle because there is no shoulder on many of these roads, but this was a huge hawk, sitting on a very large pole

Just a few miles from Medora, we both stopped at the Painted Canyon Visitors Center.  What a view and what promise for tomorrow at Theodore Roosevelt National Park.  It was an exciting part of the day, to arrive in the North Dakota Badlands, but I will put those pictures on a separate post.

I did stop at a Tourist Information desk and met "Lloyd"

In the meantime, we found our way to Mary's "Wooly Wagons," in the town of Medora.  Just a few old sheepherder's wagons, outfitted to camp in, with a shared bathroom in a bunkhouse garage.  Pretty neat, but the afternoon was HOT, so it was not a particularly inviting place for a nap.

Once the day finally cooled down, it was a good sleep!

Apparently there was once a movie, called "The Wooly Boys."
We will have to look it up someday.
