Pyrocumulous clouds

I learned about these clouds on NPR yesterday, and Hank pointed them out from the parking lot.  When a forest fire burns, superheated air over the fire rises. The moisture it contains condenses into droplets and creates the "fire clouds."  Unfortunately, they are thunderheads but the dry air below causes the rain to evaporate before it can reach the ground.  So the result can be dry lightning, and possibly start more fires!

Steve left around 6 am, following Old Rt 97.  The Okanogan River winds beautifully along.  Still hazy and the smoke is visible to the north.


Steve found it necessary to pull his neckerchief up over his mouth and nose for several hours.


I was enjoying the scenery when I happened to look to my right and did a double take.  Along the top of the mountains there was an ENORMOUS array of what looks like satellite dishes.  I stopped to take a picture, but the smoke was an effective screen. (Or maybe it was ghosts because I took the picture across a cemetery.) So I have borrowed an image from the internet. Apparently it is a VLBA, or Very Long Baseline Array, a 240 ton radio telescope with a dish 82 feet across.  It is part of a range of scopes that produce images 100 times more detailed than anything the Hubble Telescope can do!  Fascinating!

Once in Chelan, I decided it was important to visit at least one of the 30 wineries near by Lake Chelan.



The host told me they are having some kind of paragliding competition here and that there are often lots of them in the air.  I only saw one, and that was when I was driving. 

I convinced Steve that the Siren Song Vineyard Winery would be a good place for an early supper. He indulged me, and was glad he did.  Soft sunshine, mild breezes, fabulous vistas and view, as well as great food and wine.

Day 34 Davenport, IL to Dubuque, IL 83.4 miles Total 1,609.0 mi

 Steve was up at dawn and left to ride starting in the less hot part of the day.  Allane slept in a bit and then packed up.  A visit to a local bike stop for some extra tubes, and a stop at the post office, and then on toward Dubuque.  Steve had ridden against the wind all morning.  He rode 9 miles on a crushed gravel road that shook his bones, finally choosing to get on the side of the highway for a few miles.  There are more hills than in Illinois, long and rolling.  After 48 miles, we met at the City Limits family restaurant in Maquoketa, a town whose name we have no idea how to pronounce.  The waitress was no nonsense, but obviously took pride in her ability to anticipate our wants and needs.  She definitely wins the top spot for Best Waitress so far on the trip, and she set a very high standard. Steve set out again, with 35 miles to go in the over 90 degree heat and relentless sun, hoping to find paved roads all the way to Dubuque. Allane stopped at Walmart for some more powdered

Day 4: Conquering the Kank! Tot: 175.4 mi

The day was bound to be a memorable one. We spent a restful night in Center Conway, New Hampshire knowing that our ride the next day would take us up and over Mount Kancamagus, the towering gateway into New Hampshire's White Mountains.  Looking at the White Mountains from the Kancamagus Allane and I have driven the Kancamagus Highway many times going from one place to another and it was always the kind of ride that the climb of the highway was the highlight of that particular journey. The "Kank" is one of those roads that conjures up a memory from whomever you are talking with, at least in New England. At a get-together with friends one of our group said, " What are you doing? Judd, it's the Kank!" I should note at this point that Judd has recently had both of his hips replaced.  The climb is memorable for its sheer length and grade, but it's the mix of beauty of the woods and rivers that frame the experience.  How one is supposed to pronounce Kancamagu

Day 9 - Glens Falls to Amsterdam, NY - Tot: 377.4 miles

 What an interesting day! It was not meant to be a long day and, as it turned out, we were thankful for that. We started the day with the hunt for a breakfast diner. After several strikeouts - our initial choices closed - we found Sam's Diner, a small community eatery that was perfect. I have found that a good hearty breakfast is more than a necessity for me before riding.  Outside Sam's in Glens Falls, NY. We all got back to the motel only find that John had apparently lost his wallet. after check rooms and the van, John called Sam's and was told there was not a wallet inside the restaurant. UGH! Scurrying around, re-checking the room and the van John and Mary left for Sam's Diner in hopes that maybe it was somewhere. When they called, Kelly, the proprietor and head waitress, said she had found it outside where John had taken our photos. What a relief!
